An intravenous (IV) catheter is inserted in at least one body vein of every hospitalized patient throughout the world, since initial moments of hospitalization. This IV catheter (the typical "Hospital IV" line) is used for delivering drugs, nutrients and other fluids into the patient's blood stream, whenever needed, throughout the entire hospitalization period. Due to various physiological and biological reasons, withdrawal of blood samples cannot be done through the same catheter. As a result, at least once daily, the same patient is subjected to puncturing attempts in other skin areas, in the course of routine blood withdrawal rounds for lab test sampling.More so, as far as the medical personal, this routine is costly, labor-intensive, time consuming and many times risky. The existing solution is subjecting the patients to complications such as hematomas, local infections and pain. Furthermore it subjecting the healthcare personal to the threats of needlestick injuries , exposing them to infectious diseases such as several types of Hepatitis and HIV.
Elimination of a major portion of needlestick punctures will provide a relaxed environment to both patients and the Medical personal and allow easier treatment, major cost savings of labor and post- exposure treatment for healthcare workers exposed to infectious diseases and will save the health care industry substantial savings subject to liability, compensation and other associated costs
